Fuel Units Used Around the World

Different countries and regions use different units to measure fuel consumption. Our converter supports all major global standards so you can compare vehicles across markets.

🇺🇸
MPG (US)
United States
Miles per US gallon — higher is better. The standard fuel economy unit in the US.
🇬🇧
MPG (Imperial)
United Kingdom
Miles per Imperial gallon (4.546L). UK uses larger gallons than the US.
🇪🇺
L/100km
Europe, Canada, Australia
Liters per 100 kilometers — lower is better. Standard EU metric.
🇮🇳
km/L
India, China, Japan, Asia
Kilometers per liter — higher is better. Most common in Asia.
🇧🇷
km/L
Brazil, Latin America
Kilometers per liter — widely used across Latin American countries.
🇺
L/100km
Russia, CIS Countries
Liters per 100 km — standard in Russia and former Soviet states.
🇿🇦
L/100km
South Africa
Liters per 100 km — used alongside km/L in some contexts.
🇦🇪
km/L
Middle East
Kilometers per liter — common across Gulf states and Middle East.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fuel consumption measures how much fuel a vehicle uses over a given distance. It's expressed in two ways:
  • Distance per volume (km/L, MPG) — higher is better. Used in US, India, Asia.
  • Volume per distance (L/100km, gal/100mi) — lower is better. Used in Europe, Canada, Australia.
The choice of unit depends on regional conventions and automotive industry standards.
US MPG uses the US gallon (3.785 liters), while Imperial MPG uses the UK gallon (4.546 liters). Since the Imperial gallon is about 20% larger, a vehicle rated at 30 MPG US would be approximately 36 MPG Imperial.

Conversion: 1 MPG (US) = 1.20095 MPG (Imperial)
Always specify which MPG you're using when comparing fuel efficiency across markets.
Use the formula: L/100km = 100 ÷ km/L

Example: 15 km/L = 100 ÷ 15 = 6.67 L/100km

This is an inverse relationship — as km/L increases, L/100km decreases. A more fuel-efficient car has higher km/L but lower L/100km.
For US MPG: km/L = MPG × 0.425144
For Imperial MPG: km/L = MPG × 0.354006

Example: 30 MPG (US) = 30 × 0.425144 = 12.75 km/L

The conversion factor comes from: 1 mile = 1.60934 km and 1 US gallon = 3.78541 L.

  • United States: MPG (US)
  • United Kingdom: MPG (Imperial)
  • Europe, Canada, Australia: L/100km
  • India, China, Japan, most of Asia: km/L
  • Brazil, Latin America: km/L
  • Russia, CIS: L/100km
  • Middle East: km/L
  • South Africa: L/100km
Our converter supports all these regional units and more.
gal/100mi (gallons per 100 miles) is the inverse of MPG. While MPG tells you how far you can go on one gallon, gal/100mi tells you how much fuel you need to travel 100 miles.

Formula: gal/100mi = 100 ÷ MPG
Example: 25 MPG = 100 ÷ 25 = 4 gal/100mi

This unit is sometimes used in fleet management and logistics for easier fuel cost calculations.
Absolutely. Our converter is designed with a mobile-first responsive approach and works perfectly on every device — from basic keypad phones to 4K desktop displays. The interface adapts intelligently: desktops get a sidebar, tablets get a collapsible sidebar, and mobile devices get optimized dropdowns. Touch interactions, scroll snapping, and momentum scrolling are all optimized for mobile.
Our converter delivers results accurate to 10 significant digits using conversion factors from official metrology institutes including NIST and BIPM. The conversion factors we use:
  • 1 mile = 1.609344 km (exact)
  • 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L (exact)
  • 1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609 L (exact)
This level of precision is suitable for engineering, scientific, and professional applications.

Yes! Our converter handles both types seamlessly. You can convert from km/L (distance per volume) to L/100km (volume per distance) and vice versa. The converter automatically applies the inverse relationship formula when switching between these two measurement paradigms.
